In Flight Running Launches New “PR+” Training
Program
February 9, 2010—In Flight Running,
a Houston-based run coaching organization, is offering
a new run coaching program called “PR+.” The purpose
of the 12 week, spring program is to help Houston
area runners improve their personal best on race
times at distances ranging from the 5K to half marathon.
On the heels of the 38th running of the Houston
Marathon and Half Marathon in January, the program
will focus on reducing weekly running mileage and
using hill and speed interval workouts, running
drills and core body strengthening to improve running
economy, form, technique and speed. Runners of all
skill levels are welcome.
“PR+” will offer participants 24 weekday workouts
at various locations and 12 casual group member
runs each Thursday night from Fleet Feet Sports
in Rice Village. Fleet Feet is the title sponsor
of “PR+.” Participants also receive guidance and
advice from experienced coaches, coaching support
at local weekend road races, seminars from local
running experts and a tech tank or T-shirt. A $100.00
fee covers all aspects of the program. Registration
is now open at www.inflightrunning.com.
“Who wants to be a slower runner”? asks In Flight
head coach and founder, Michael Merlino. “Every
person who falls in love with the sport of running
is on that quest for a new “PR” or personal best.
Whether your pace is 13:30 per mile or 7:00 per
mile, our hope is that our new “PR+” program will
help runners improve speed, gain strength and reduce
their risk of injury along the way.” Head coach
and founder Duval Ruiz adds ”it is much easier to
get a personal best at the 5K or 10K distance than
the half marathon or marathon distance. “Our new
program is designed to purposely bring total mileage
down and work on the fine tuning runners need to
improve short distance race times. Doing that can
lead to the promise of potential PRs at the half
marathon to marathon distance down the road.”
Training starts on Monday, February 22nd and continues
through Wednesday May 12th. Both a 5:30 AM and 6:00
PM workout is offered on Mondays and Wednesdays
so runners can choose a session time that best fits
their schedule. Mondays will consist of weekly,
alternating, short-distance track and mid-distance
speed play interval workouts. Wednesdays will consist
of weekly, alternating short distance hill drills
and medium distance cross country workouts. Training
sessions will be held in Houston at the Lamar High
School track, Memorial Park running trail and the
hilly terrain of the Buffalo Bayou trail system.
The season also includes a planned group trip to
the inaugural America's Run 5K/Half Marathon at
Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas on April 11th.
The season ends with a group trip to Corpus Christi,
Texas, on May 15th where members will team up and
run the Beach to Bay Marathon Relay. The Beach to
Bay is one of the country's most exciting marathon
relays where teams of six runners each run a 4.36
mile leg.
