This program offers 24 weeks of Wednesday am or pm interval training workouts. The first 12 weeks are hill training workouts on Buffalo Bayou. The second 12 weeks are speed training workouts alternating between Lamar High School track workouts and speed play workouts on the outer northwest trail of Memorial Park. Great for pure short distance road racers, triathletes or marathoners or half marathoners preparing for the Houston Marathon. This program can be purchased separately or is also included in our "Essentials" marathon & half marathon program. 12 weeks of hills or track can also be purchased separately (scroll down for those options). Hill Interval Training

US Marathon Olympic Gold medalist, Frank Shorter, once said that hill training is "speed work in disguise" . In our opinion hill training is the missing link that most runners need to take their running to a whole new level. Mimicking hilly terrain during training physically and mentally prepares runners for what they may face on the race course and can help improve race times from the 5K to marathon distance and beyond. Do you have the need for speed? Who doesn't and honestly the only way you will run faster is to practice running faster in a controlled environment. Improved times with various interval distances on a 400 meter track improves turnover, form, power and can really help bring those race times down. Most long runs originate from our meeting place inside Memorial Park. We meet in the parking lot adjacent to the softball fields in the northeast corner of the park close to the Westcott Drive entrance to the park. On some weeks we mix it up and meet at other locations like Hermann Park, the Houston Heights, Terry Hershey Park and other city parks that have adjacent running trail access. A few times each season we plan long run road trips to Galveston, Seabrook/Kemah Running Trails and Huntsville State Park to vary the terrain a bit in a more scenic setting.

During our 12 week speed training season we alternate between a track workout at the Lamar High School track and the Memorial outer trail for speed play workouts. Memorial Park is the flagship running location for Houston runners located off of Interstate I10 and the Westcott/Washington exit. The group meets in front of the asphalt running track across from the tennis center. Workouts are run on the new outer crushed granite trail. We have found that alternating workouts between a standard 400 meter track and softer ground minimizes injury, adds variety and allows us to create an entirely different type of speed workout that is both fun and challenging.

Training Duration: 50 - 60 Minutes - 3 - 6 Mile Run


In Members can meet up for a loose, open training run on Thursday evenings for 3 - 6 miles from the Fleet Feet running store in West University. On Thursday evenings after work head over to the Fleet Feet Rice store for a 6:00 pm Rice University/Hermann Park run. Bring your gym bag with you, shop, change at the store and grab a mid week member run. Fluids are provided at the beginning and end of mid week runs but we do recommend running with a hydration belt or carrying a bottle of fluids with you during hot and humid days.
