Hill training workouts are a great way for runners to increase pace, power, and strength in both the upper and lower body. Hill training intervals have been coined as “speedwork in disguise” allowing runners to increase their aerobic capacity just as much as speed or track workouts would do.

Hill training dramatically improves cardiovascular strength and power and prepares runners to tolerate the long, primary training season during the warm summer and fall months in Houston. By mimicking the terrain runners will experience on race courses,  hill training prepares runners for race day and makes them both mentally and physically tougher.

Hill workouts are designed for both beginners and advanced runners.  Our hill training workouts are run on hilly terrain along Buffalo Bayou and White Oak Bayou just west of Downtown Houston.  Workouts are held on alternating Tuesday evenings at 6:15 PM and include a .75 to 1-mile warm-up run and 50 minutes worth of hilly intervals.  Workout elevation varies from rolling hills to more gradual inclines.  Interval distances of 800m (.5 miles), 1200m (.75 miles) and 1600m (1 mile) are run at predicted 5K and 10K pace.  Standing recovery periods are built in between each hill interval.

In Flight Running alternates between a variety of hill training courses to challenge our runners and avoid boredom.  Some hill circuits have more sustained intervals with gradual grades while others include tougher inclines along rolling hill segments.
